Spring Rugby Report

OCRFC comfortably sit second in the league, after losing an epic battle to North Bristol RFC at the end of January. This game was closely followed by a defeat to a much-improved Broad Plain team. Since then, wins against Southmead, a youthful United Bristol Hospital (who only sit bottom of the league due to the number of games they need to postpone out of term time), third placed Ashley Down Old Boys, as well as being awarded a walkover over a depleted St Brendan’s OB team, have put OCRFC in second place in the league with three games to go.

OCRFC have recently been recruiting some young recent OC leavers and our relationship with UWE remains strong, not without the efforts of various playing and committee members to ensure this.

The Rugby club have entered the ‘much to be decided’ RFU National Cup, and have withdrawn from the local cup. OCRFC have a chance of heading to a national final, against teams of similar league categories from across England. Fixtures and venues will be shared ASAP.

A Coaching change is in the reckoning, as we like to thank Head Coach and Bristol Bear, Sam Bedlow for his efforts and two years at the helm, before he moves back to Manchester to play for Sale Sharks. Jake Woolmore will remain on the coaching staff as we search to have a coach to take us, if the RFU decide, most likely, to take us up a league at the end of the season. As much excitement as moving up a league provides, there are significant administration, logistical barriers and pathways that the OC Committee are starting to plan.

The Rugby Dinner takes place on Saturday 13th May at the School.
