O.C. Golf Society Spring Meeting -23rd April 2023

The venue for the first meeting of 2023 was the popular Chipping Sodbury Golf Club.  Although golf had been played on the adjacent Common for many decades prior, the club as we know it today, was opened in 1971.   A number of enhancements over the years, including the addition of several water features, and the maturing of trees and vegetation, has developed the venue into a most pleasant parkland course, with easterly views to the Cotswold escarpment. The holes are challenging, without being punitive to the high handicap golfer, but a number of the O.C.s commented, that , at a fraction short of 7000 yards, the course was a demanding test of stamina.

A good attendance of twenty golfers, was spearheaded by the School hierarchy of Headmaster Jeremy McCullough, Deputy Head Paul Hill, and Head of the Lower School David Edwards, a youthful contingent of George Thomas, Ding Yang, and Tom Mannion, visitors from afar, such as Sam and Pat Bowrey, Paul Winterbottom, Pete Boswell, plus our local “regulars”.  In addition, Mike Humphries and Dave Tooze formed a “walking wounded” category, observing proceedings around the course from the comfort of a buggy.

George Thomas’ “youngsters” led the groups, teeing off at 1.30 p.m., in generally sunny conditions, although a cool breeze was, at times, quite noticeable on the more elevated holes. The fairways and greens seemed in good condition, with just a few inevitable damp patches.   The rain held off until the end of most group’s rounds, and by the time it became heavier, everyone was relaxing in the clubhouse, debating the day’s play and performances.  An early analysis pointed to a very competitive afternoon, with only five points separating the top nine golfers.

The Dining Room and main bar are located on the upper storey of the clubhouse, in an elevated position, with views across the course.  This was the setting for an excellent meal of steak pie, fries, and vegetables, followed by blackberry and apple crumble.

Dave Tooze gave his customary welcome to all the attendees, who had contributed to a most successful and enjoyable day.  We were delighted that senior member Peter (Ernie) Huckle was able to join us for the meal and prize giving. He advised that his playing days are over, however it is likely that public demand will not permit this premature retirement!   We also learned that Pat Bowrey was playing one his last rounds before two knee replacement operations. All at the O.C.G.S. wish Pat every success and a rapid recovery. A mandatory “Jethro” joke preceded the prize giving.
