Sad News-Graham Searle

Our condolences
Our condolences

Very sadly we have to let you know that Graham passed away peacefully on Wednesday 24th April following a period of ill health.

Graham was a transformational Head to whom the school owes a lot. He was appointed to be Head of Colston’s School in 1975, aged 37, from Stamford School, and he remained until 1988. Graham was an Oxford graduate in History and was determined to raise the profile of cultural opportunities. He was responsible for instigating the House Drama competition that, in fact, we have just re-launched this this year!

Graham was very keen on sport too; his great love was cricket. He developed the sports facilities to a new level during his tenure; the school had new squash courts, an all-weather hockey pitch, and a Sports Hall to boot!

The school raised over £300,000 in Graham’s time and, as well as the new sporting facilities, an Assembly Hall was built, and the first turf was cut for the new teaching block.

The school moved to co-educational education during his headship and there was a big rise in the pupil roll. Graham was able to achieve all of this while improving exam results. Graham can be seen here welcoming Princess Diana on a flying visit.

Funeral arrangements are currently being finalised. If you are interested in attending, please email alumni@collegiate.org.uk and we will send you details when we have them. Our thoughts are with Pauline, Chris and Andrew.
